Guiding foreigners in fluent English- an English -speaking bus driver

　　A message on the BBS of Qingqingdao Community of www.qingdaonews.com led me to interview a No.26 bus driver---Gai Peng. "I met a bus driver today; he's great," said a net friend after witnessing the driver guiding in fluent English a foreign passenger.

　　Around 7 o'clock in the evening, Feb. 25, a foreigner got on the bus at Carefour Supermarket and told Gai in Chinese that he would get off at Qingdao World Trade Center. He said in English, "Two stops off!" and the foreigner was surprised with his English and praised Gai for it. Knowing he met one who could speak English, the foreigner talked with him all the way to his destination at Zhanshan stop.

　　Yesterday afternoon, I met 29-year-old Gai at Bus No.26 terminal . He said, "When I see the foreign passengers are so glad when offered help, I feel satisfied and pride, too." When summer tour season comes, people can often encounter foreigners on the bus. The difficulties the foreigners had compelled Gai to pick up English. Gai was mad with English for his love of the language on top of the English courses offered by the bus company. He bought more English books, and as practice he tried his first English on foreigners. Soon afterwards, he could talk with them fluently in English. By now he has helped a dozen of passengers, those tourists from countries like France, Russia and Iceland. Also, he knows when to speak English to foreign passengers if they do not know Chinese.

　　With the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta nearing, more foreigners will come to Qingdao. "We need more drivers like Gai Peng", the net friend said. One official from Bus No.26 team informed me of the company's call upon all the drivers to take him as an example to learn some conversational English in order to do something for the future Olympic Games.(Li Xiaohua)

　　2月25日晚7时许，一名外国友人在家乐福车站登上了盖澍驾驶的26路车，用中文告诉司机要在世贸中心下车。"twostops！"盖澍用英语告诉他还有两站路时，外国朋友一下子愣住了，随即"老外"对盖澍的英语赞不绝口。找到"知己"后，外国朋友和盖澍聊到了湛山才下车。

　　昨天下午，记者在26路车南京路总站见到了盖澍。这个29岁的小伙子说，"看到外国朋友得到帮助后开心的样子，我自己也很有成就感。"每年夏天的旅游旺季，跑海边线路的公交车拉到外国游客是常事。看到不少外国游客不会说中文，无法表达时着急的样子，给了盖澍学说英语的动力。路队上也安排驾驶员学习些简单常用的英语对话，加上自己比较喜欢，盖澍一下子学上了瘾。自己购买了英语书籍，平时碰见外国朋友便主动打招呼，锻炼自己的口语，一段时间下来后，盖澍终于可以和外国朋友自由沟通了。如今，盖澍已经用英语帮助过法国、俄罗斯、冰岛等国家的十几名外国游客乘坐公交车，并且他还学会了"看人下菜"，遇到中文流利的外国人则用中文指路，碰上中文说不利索的则用英语对话。

　　2008年奥帆赛在青岛举行，将会有更多的外国友人到来，正如那位网友在帖子中所说："2008年的青岛需要更多像盖澍这样的司机。"26路队的董书记告诉记者，公司得知盖澍的事情后，立即发动全体乘务人员向他学习，掌握必要的英语会话，为2008年的奥帆赛作准备。臧旭平
