¡¡¡¡Chinese clubs Shandong and Shenzhen face testing matches on Wednesday if
they are to keep alive their hopes of progress in the Asian Champions League.
¡¡¡¡Shandong go to Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia, the holders, level at 1-1 after
the first leg of their quarter-final clash, wh
ile Shenzhen entertain another
Saudi outfit Al-Ahli trailing 2-1 after last week's opener in Jeddah.
¡¡¡¡The other quarter-finals see Pas of Iran facing 2003 champions Al-Ain of
the United Arab Emirates in Teheran with the sides locked at 1-1 while Qatar's
Al-Sadd welcome South Korea's Busan I'Park trailing 3-0.
¡¡¡¡Chinese Cup winners Shandong go into their match with Al-Ittihad in Jeddah
missing influential striker Li Jinyu who has a knee injury while Zheng Zhi has
been struggling with an ankle problem.
¡¡¡¡Coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic could bring in 17-year-old winger Cui Peng and
20-year-old Zhou Haibin.
¡¡¡¡"The two Al-Ittihad centre halves, Redha Tukar and Adnan Ibrahim, are both
big, strong players so its not easy to play through the centre against them,"
the coach told www.footballasia.com.
¡¡¡¡"We must use the wings more to attack them and maybe try some new tactics
as well as making better use of our free kicks."
¡¡¡¡Shenzhen, meanwhile, must overcome the disappointment of losing 2-1 to
Al-Ahli last week in a game where skipper Yang Chen headed into his own goal
three minutes from time.
¡¡¡¡"We still have a chance to qualify, and we have a big chance to advance
because we'll be playing in our home ground in the second leg," said coach Guo
Ruilong.
¡¡¡¡Al-Ahli coach Ilja Lukic is keen for victory for more than one reason as
progress to the final could give his side a date with Al-Ittihad who he coached
for three years from 1999-2002.
¡¡¡¡Al-Ain boss Milan Macala was angry with the referee in last week's 1-1 draw
against Pas.
¡¡¡¡Uzbekistan referee Ravshan Irmatov pulled play back to give Al-Ain a free
kick 25 metres from goal after Pas goalkeeper Hassan Roudbarian had deliberately
handled the ball outside the penalty area in the 60th minute.
¡¡¡¡The transgression earned the Iranian goalkeeper a direct red card but
Irmatov awarded the home side a free kick, a decision which puzzled the veteran
coach.
¡¡¡¡Widely-travelled coach Bora Milutinovic faces one of his biggest challenges
when his Al-Sadd club battle to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Busan IPark.
